Nationwide, an extensive group of companies offering insurance and financial services, is based in Columbus, Ohio. The company has regional headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa; Gainesville, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Westerville, Ohio; and Sacramento, California.

Nationwide has a long flourishing history that dates back to the 1920s. Back then, they went by the name of Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance. They set up headquarters in Ohio when they obtained their license on April 10, 1926 and then got their financing two days later. They had more than 1,000 policy holders at that time and launched their first product, automobile insurance.

Expanding to Other States

Their growing popularity allowed them to expand to other states in the country. Soon, they opened offices in West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Vermont, and Delaware. They provided insurance to small towns in 1931 and then to prominent cities in 1934. That same year, they also added fire insurance. In 1935, they bought the Life Insurance Company of America, and aptly renamed it as the Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company.

By 1934, the company had set up operations in 12 states, including  Washington D.C. With space running out in their main headquarters, the company hit another milestone in 1951 by opening their regional offices. In 1955, they changed their name to what you know now —Nationwide Insurance.

Now, the company has more than 25,000 associates in locations across the United States and have more than 25 office locations with 100 or more associates. Their corporate headquarters in Columbus, Ohio has over 10,000 associates. They have been operating for more than 85 years and have become one of the largest insurance and financial service companies in the country and world.

Nationwide has been ranked at number 66 in the Fortune 500 list in 2018 and ranked at number 53 in the Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

The company has also sponsored several notable events and causes such as the Nationwide Tour, Nationwide Children’s Hospital where they donated $50 million, made Columbus become a major league city by building the Nationwide arena, the title sponsor of the NASCAR Nationwide, sponsored the PGA Tour Memorial Tournament, and co-sponsored the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
